Ankle Ligament Reconstruction: Ankle Sprains and Chronic Instability

Dr. Simon Tournemine

Orthopaedic Surgeon in Paris

Rupture of the lateral ankle ligaments is a common consequence of an ankle sprain. When persistent instability develops, surgical reconstruction of these ligaments may be recommended.

The damaged ligaments are reconstructed using a tendon graft secured through bone tunnels created in the talus, calcaneus and fibula.

The procedure is performed arthroscopically, using a minimally invasive, camera-assisted technique that avoids opening the ankle joint.

Following ligament reconstruction, the ankle regains its stability, allowing patients to progressively return to sporting activities.
